Biblical and Historical Origins of False Gods

After God flooded the earth during the time of Noah, his sons Japheth, Ham, and Shem started the human race anew. Below is their genealogy right down to the 12 sons of Jacob.

All the names above gave birth to nations of the earth.

According to the Bible and archeological findings by Ron Wyatt in 1987, the ark of Noah touched down on a mountain in the region of Ararat which is in modern-day Turkey.

After the flood, the vegetation had to recover due to being submerged underwater for one hundred and fifty days. As the number of Noah's descendants grew, they looked for more fertile lands in which to establish themselves. The first human civilization after the flood began in the historical region of Mesopotamia which means: the land between rivers.

The fertile region of Mesopotamia was also the birthplace of Paganism - the worship of false gods. We will now turn our attention to one of Noah's descendants, Nimrod the son of Cush, the grandson of Ham. The Bible says that he was "...a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before (against) the Lord..." Genesis 10:8-9.

Nimrod built a few cities that laid the foundation of great empires throughout history. The Bible records the names of these cities:
  • Babel - which was later known as Babylonia
  • Erech (Uruk) - the beginning of the Sumerian kingdom
  • Accad (Akkad) - the beginning of the Akkadian kingdom.
  • Calneh - very little information is recorded about this city.

According to the Bible (Genesis 10:10), these were the cities of the plains of Shinar, one language, all descended from Noah, the first empire of the world. Nimrod its king decided to build a tower in his capital Babel (Genesis 11:1-4), but God saw the wicked motives of the men who were building it and confounded their language and scattered them over the earth (Genesis 11:5-9).

Nimrod "...went forth to Asshur (Assyria), and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city (Genesis 10:11-12). Assyria was the land of Asshur, one of Noah's grandsons.

The building of the Tower of Babel shows man's cooperation with Satan to go against the promise of God in that He would never again flood the earth. The historic Sumerian tablets record that these people do not worship Jehovah the Creator God. We are going to look now at the birth of Paganism from the time of Nimrod.

The apostle Paul paints a picture of Paganism in his letter to the Roman Christians of his time:

Romans 1
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

The people during Nimrod's time knew about the Creator God, learning of Him through nature and from the history passed down from their forefathers. Due to their own choices and submitting to the will of the Devil they began to make false gods of the sun, moon, stars, and the works of nature. The knowledge of Jehovah was lost from their minds.

Mesopotamians worshipped gods which they believed lived in the heavens and the netherworld. Given below is a list of some of the main gods in the Mesopotamian pantheon:

An the God of Heaven - He was believed to have been responsible for the creation of all things and was associated with the calendar and the time cycles. He is said to be the ruler of all the stars and constellations of the equatorial sky.

Enlil the God of Earth and Sky - He is said to be the king of the gods and was associated with the sky, earth, weather, thunder, and lightning. Enlil is believed to be the ruler of all the stars and constellations of the northern sky.

Enki the God of Water - Was believed to be the wisest and tactful of all the gods. He was associated with the rivers and seas. He was believed also to be the god of art and magic. Enki ruled over the stars and constellations of the southern sky.

Ninhursag the Mother Goddess - She was associated with new life and nature. Some call her today Mother Nature or Gaia, the spirit of the Earth.

Utu/Shamash the Sun God - He is the god of justice and was believed to be the god of the sun.

Sin/Nanna the Moon God - He is the Mesopotamian god of wisdom.

Inanna/Ishtar the Evening Star - The goddess Inanna was associated with the evening star which was later known to be the planet, Venus. She was the Mesopotamian goddess of war, love, and sexual immorality.

The seven gods above were some of the main gods in the original Mesopotamian pantheon. The people of that time called them "the seven gods who decree the fate of men." There were many other minor gods of our Mesopotamian ancestors but all of them were not Jehovah the Creator God.

When God scattered the people from the Tower of Babel, they took their gods with them and worshipped them in their own languages and cultures. Thus paganism spread all over the different ethnic and cultural groups of the human race. But if we look closely at the gods of our different cultures, we will see their resemblance and connection to the ancient Mesopotamian religion of the kingdom of Nimrod.

During the reign of Nebuchadnezzar I, the grandfather of Nebuchadnezzar II, in Babylon, the king of their pantheon was Marduk whose name was later changed to Bel, which means Lord. They believed that the planet Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, represented the god Marduk. Babylon is also famous for the blue Ishtar gate.

During the reign of Solomon the king (1 Kings 11:5), his wives tempted and convinced him to worship Astarte the goddess of the Canaanites. History designates her as the goddess of war, passion, and sex. She is none other than a newer version of the ancient Ishtar of the Mesopotamians.

A few generations later, during the reign of King Ahab, Elijah the prophet went against the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel (1 Kings 18). Baal was the king of the gods of the Sidonians and the Canaanites. Baal is none other than the adoption of Bel of the Babylonians and Enlil of the ancient kingdoms.

In the book of Zephaniah the prophet, the accounts record how God was wroth with the Israelites because they turned to other gods (Zephaniah chapter 1). Said the prophet, "... Them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham." Zephaniah 1:5. To the people of Moab, Malcham/Moloch was believed to be the king of the gods. The sacrifice of infants was associated with the worship of Moloch. In fact, the word Moloch means king or lord.

1500BC - during the time of the Persian kingdom, known today as Iran, Mithra was known as the god of the sun associated with justice and the keeping of vows. This was none other than the adoption of Utu, the ancient Mesopotamian sun god of justice. A few thousand years later, the ancient Mithra worship resurfaces in Rome during the 2nd century BC. The new form of Mithraism was associated with loyalty to kings and emperors.

The plague of false gods went down with the people who settled in the Egyptian region. Here are some of their well-known deities:

Amun-Ra - This was the Egyptian god who was lord over all. He is none other than the development of An of the ancients.

Isis - One of the most famous Egyptian deities. She was called the mother of the gods and served the gods and men alike. This was none other than Ninhursag, the mother goddess of the Mesopotamians.

Osiris - The Egyptians believed that he was the king of the gods. He was also the god of the underworld and of the dead.

Ra - The Egyptian sun God is none other than an adoption of the ancient Mesopotamian god of the sun, Utu.

Horus the Younger - He was the son of Isis and is one of the most powerful gods of Egypt. He as often associated with the sun and the moon. He was the god of the heavens and saw all through his all-seeing eye. He was the god of the pharaohs of Egypt.

Ptah - He is believed to have made all things, even the gods themselves. He was before all.

Thoth - The Egyptian God of wisdom. He is none other than an adoption of the ancient Mesopotamian god, Enki.

There are many other Egyptian deities, but the noticeable fact about all these gods is they are all associated with nature as the apostle Paul has said, "... They worshipped the creature more than the creator."

Given below is a list of all the gods of different cultures, and nations throughout history:

GREEK PANTHEON

We have just looked at a few pantheons of different cultures throughout the history of men. All these forms of false worship originate from the foundation that was set by the ancient Nimrodian kingdom. There more catastrophic and sad fact of all is that the principles of false worshipped have entered even into Christianity.

God commands in His ten commandments:

Exodus 20
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

God hates it when His people turn to the worship of false gods because it will lead to their own destruction. Said Paul to the Corinthians:

2 Corinthians 6
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Today we have even brought in the worship of false gods into our homes and into our individual lives. For example, the ancients worshipped the sun, moon and stars, but we today give our adoration to Superstars and Celebrities.

The Devil has so deceived us that we do not even know what we're doing wrong in the eyes of God. False gods are worshipped in the very churches of Christianity. God forbade the making of idols and graven images but we can see that in many of our churches, especially the Catholic church.

The celebration of Christmas and Easter has no Biblical foundation whatsoever, but was brought in by the pagan worshippers. The weekly Sabbath of God (Exodus 20:8-11) was changed to Sunday by the Catholic church to accommodate for the weekly day of the sun of paganism. All these changes are the skillful working of the prince of darkness through his human agents.

The deceptive work of the devil has so well infiltrated every aspect of the human race. Please wake up and do something about it.

God bless you....
