Apocalypse | 009 | What is the Lord's Day?
On September 24, 2013, someone asked this question in an online bible study forum:
The phrase, the Lord's day, found in Revelation chapter one, occurs only once in the New Testament. What evidence do we have to determine what day John was talking about?The ways it seems to generally be understood among many Christian denominations are as follows:
- Christians generally believe John referred to Sunday, the first day of the week.
- Christian Sabbath observers such as Seventh Day Baptists and Messianic Christians believe John referred to the Sabbath of the LORD (7th day: Saturday).
- Other denominations like the Church of God believes John refers to the day of the LORD, a day of judgment.
Let us, from the Bible, answer the question above.
If we examine the text and language closely, John referred to this day as the Lord's. Common sense tells us that this day belongs to God. Let's establish a few parameters. There are:
- 365 days in a year
- 28-31 days in the 12 months
- 7 days a week
The first mention of days as parameters of time was mapped out in Genesis chapter one, where God established the first seven-day week. The first mention of the month was made in Genesis 29:14 in the story of Jacob. The first mention of years was in the genealogy of Adam in Genesis chapter 5.
The seventh day of the creation week is worthy to be noted because, out of the rest of the days, God did peculiar things with it. "...On the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." (Genesis 2:2-3)
Question: Is this the Lord's day?
Let the Bible answer:
"If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on MY HOLY DAY; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." (Isaiah 58:13-14)
The seventh-day Sabbath is the Lord's day. Said Jesus in His own words, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath." (Mark 2:27-28)
This is what God says in His Word.

This is the day of Adonai. The seventh day of creation, the day in which he rests. He can rest because he has his Sons managing his affairs. We his mighty warriors, the 144,000. Those of us who are mature, walking in the fullness of the stature of Christ our Lord. We look exactly like our Elder brother. Because he is our hearts in his fullness by the fullness of his Spirit which inhabits us. WE walk when and where he directs, he leads us from the cloud of witnesses where he dwells in Paradise. Before us is Eden and behind us is a devastated wilderness. WE mount up as a troupe and mount a wall and leap over a roof, every man knows his place and we do not break ranks. This is the day of the Lord.
